Pollution Prevention: Fundamentals and Practice
Dr. Innerebner will be teaching a course this spring as an
adjunct professor at the Colorado School of Mines. Students
may access this web page for details on reading assignments and to
download handouts.
The objective of this course is to introduce the
principles of pollution prevention, environmentally benign products,
processes, and manufacturing systems. The course provides a thorough
foundation in concepts and methods of pollution prevention. Sources
of pollution and its consequences are detailed. Focus includes
sources and minimization of industrial pollution; methodology for
life-cycle assessments and developing successful pollution
prevention plans; technological means for minimizing the use of
water, energy, and reagents in manufacturing; and tools for
achieving a sustainable society. Materials selection, process and
product design, and packaging are also addressed.
This class includes one mandatory and four non-mandatory field trips to see
pollution prevention practices in different industries. We
will be touring a municipal solid waste recycling facility, a
brewery, a manufacturer of ornamental steel, an aggregate recycler, a cheese manufacturing plant, and a beef processing
facility.
Class will be in Alderson Hall room 152 on Thursday nights
beginning at 6:00 pm.
